Live Search gets desperate

The ideas-men at Microsoft have had another brainwave to help their fledgling search engine, Live Search gain some search traffic, bribe users. Live search has not enjoyed much success and has been failing to take any of Google or Yahoos traffic. The new scheme to coax users involves giving ‘SearchPerk’ loyalty points (up to 25 a day) for performing searches. These points can then be traded in for prizes. The plan is flawed- people wanting anything decent will have to wait a long time. For example an Xbox 360 controller will cost you 5500 points- you get 500 points for signing up to SearchPerks and then 25 points a day so it will take you 200 days of searching 25 times on Live Search. You will also have to use Internet Explorer, Windows and live in the US.

Hmmmm, maybe write a script to do searches from diferent user accounts and then do 25 searches a day on random terms for the next 200 days, and hey presto, a box of free controllers.
If I move to the US

It appears the desperation doesn’t stop there http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/10/02/microsoft_turns_searchers_into_gamblers/ I wonder what carrot they’ll dangle to UK users?
