Hello, I’m Julia Shuvalova, and I’ve recently joined PushON as their multilingual SEO specialist. I worked previously for Latitude Group Ltd. as a multilingual PPC specialist managing Britain-based and international clients. I’ve been using the Internet for academic and media research since 2000, and I’ve been writing for the web since 2005. In 2006 I started my own blog, Notebooks (under my pen name), which has recently been admitted to the DMOZ (Open Directory Project). I am fluent in Russian and French and hold two MAs in History. Previously I worked as a freelance translator/interpreter, researcher and journalist for the BBC Radio Manchester, CSV Media Clubhouse, and Datamonitor, among others.

I’m absolutely thrilled to become a part of PushON. The company combines cutting-edge professionalism in their field with a wonderful working environment. Add to that a light modern office in Manchester’s city centre and the all-company great sense of humour and love for music. This is an ideal place for someone like me, who is creative, curious and loves exploring new territories rather than following the beaten track. I’m excited about using my foreign languages, research, radio journalism and sound editing skills, and blogging – something I totally adore. Oh, and listening to the great music, of course!

Audio broadcasting is no-longer confined to expensive recording studios, podcasting is becoming more mainstream. There are a few things you need to get started in podcasting, and I’ve put together my checklist to save you some time.

Podcasting Hardware

You’ll need to record audio. You can use a portable audio recorder. One that has been highly recommended is the Samsung Zoom H2 which is roughly £150.

Or you can record audio on most PCs if you plug in a headset with microphone. You can also plug the headset into the audio recorder so you can record hands-free.

Podcasting Software

Audacity is a great piece of free software that you can use to cut, edit, add intros, music and sound effects before you publish.

Podcast Hosting

If you host on your own servers and the podcast becomes very popular, it could become expensive. Libsyn is specifically for hosting podcasts and charges a set fee, which won’t fluctuate with data usage. This costs roughly $30/month.

Publicising a Podcast

To publicise your podcast, submit the feed to the following Podcast directories:

iTunes [warning this opens iTunes so you have to submit thought this]

Feedburner

Yahoo Podcasts

Podanza

Podcastblaster

iTunestracks

If you’re being thorough, there are a few others here listed here – Masternewmedia.org

This will be a one-time submission – you submit the feed url at the start, and these directories will keep up-to-date with the shows you publish with Libsyn (or whichever host you use)

Other ways to publicise your podcast

Blog about it – I’d recommend having a WordPress blog specifically for each podcast. You can add slides, images, RSS feed and show notes here. Listeners can comment and ask questions, and it can act as a homepage for your podcast.

Create a Facebook page – As with a blog, you can add your podcast feed, podcast schedule, notes, etc. Listeners can comment or collaborate.

Add a note to your email signature.

Write an online press release.

Mention it in offline advertising, on-hold music, etc.

Request feedback from listeners on reviews such as iTunes and Yahoo

Podcast Guides

These links should help for when you get started:

Guide to all aspects of podcasting

iTunes shows how to mark up your xml correctly

Podcast Guide from About.com

The most important tools in Podcasting…

Confidence and practice!

_________________

If you have any recommendations, or opinions let me know & I’ll update.

Thanks!

To make life easier for those interested in the same field, I’ve put together some of my personal recommendations.

Online Marketing Podcasts

Academy Internet is a UK based company which produces the Internet Marketing Podcast. They offer advice on new topics such as Web 2.0, Social Media and Podcasting, they explain current best practice online marketing techniques, and warn us away from black hat. It’s a great free resource from an agency that clearly know what they’re doing. Here’s the link to the Internet Marketing Podcast.

Marketing Experiments; this podcast is in the format of telephone conferences and discussion of reports. Some of the content can be quite dry, but it’s well researched, and they have useful statistics. Download the Marketing Experiments Podcast here.

Web Design Podcasts

Boagworld is another UK based company which produce a podcast for those who are involved in designing, developing and running websites. The shows are easy to listen to, and covers topics such as web accessibility, standards based design, blogging and new developments in the field. They generally waffle for the first 10 minutes of so, but it’s worth hanging on for the high quality content, and it’s usually quite amusing. Here’s the link to the Boagworld Podcast.

Photoshop Killer Tips is a video podcast showing useful tutorials for Photoshop users; along with Photoshop User TV. These are both useful and have graphical examples. Photoshop TV is more laid back and conversational, it’s easy to watch, but sometimes goes of topic.

Links to Photoshop Killer Tips podcast and Photoshop User TV podcast are here.

We like Search Engine Roundtable as a place for thought on the “stuff that we do”. It has a voice that doesn’t annoy us. I’m using “we” and “us” in the Royal sense of course. We like the way they deliver the information and thought pieces they have. Not a lot of fluff. Think of it as intelligent editorial filtering out the fluff from a lot of what we read. We are really chuffed that they will be delivering a podcast in the very near future. Occasionally when we are on our travels, we like to doa bit of thinking and podcasts are a fantastic way to bring thought into your travels. Plug in the MP3 player and you have custom content in the car. Admittedly most of the time we’re playing odd noisy tunes that just about everyone else hates, but hey, it’s their right to be wrong.

So back on to the thread, we’re pretty excited about having what we hope will be a decent SEO podcast. Unfortunately it seems to be in conjunction with Webmaster Radio FM whose voice we don’t like. Lots of words, thin on the info. As far as I can work out, the general podcast from them is along the lines of

“So hey, we’re rilly stoked here at Webmaster Radio FM, we’re kicking back and y’know, just chillin, and we got my main man, my homey, whose going to be laying it down on the Google front. So JJ, how’s it hanging? My man, dude!”

“Hey hey big guy, how are ya, how are ya how are ya”

“Hey JJ, I got my coffee, I’m good, I’m good. So how are ya my homey?”

“yeah big guy, I’m chillin, I’m hanging”

And so on. Regretably you get he picture.

So I’ve got two messages:

Excited about the Search Engine Roundtable in the hope it will actually be useful and listenable.

and very concious that “voice” is important. Think about who is listening/reading/watching and how you would want to interact with them
