Facebook launches new job finder service

Market leading social media network site Facebook has launched a new jobs search service, enabling its members to hunt for a vocational position in a particular location, within a chosen business sector, or according to particular skill requirements.

Users will also be able to apply directly via Facebook for any suitable positions they find on the site.

Although the service appears to be currently biased towards the jobs market in the US, many commentators feel it is inevitable that the service will eventually become both a major source of career information and a key recruitment opportunity for jobseekers in the UK.

This view is supported by the reported involvement of dedicated jobs search website, Monster, in the new Facebook recruitment service.

Some commentators have even gone further and suggested that the new Facebook jobs page could threaten the viability of business contacts social media site, LinkedIn.

Others however point out that Facebook’s demographic is relatively younger compared with that of LinkedIn, where users are generally older and tend to be based in middle or senior management roles.

Facebook’s foray into the jobs market may be timely, given the news that another social media site has been created with a view to targeting younger jobseekers based in the UK.

The new site, Go Think Big, is the result of a joint collaboration between Heat magazine publisher, Bauer, and mobile phone operator, O2. The site features a large number of positions suitable for graduates and other first-time jobseekers, as well as offering practical advice to young people looking for work.
