Instagram, Beeb and Google+ all take gongs in Webbys

New Facebook acquisition Instagram has taken the Breakout of the Year award at the 2012 Webbys. It is just one of many sites recognised for the first time.

The Webbys, deemed by many to be the online equivalent of The Oscars, also gave awards for the first time to the BBC News website, Pinterest, Spotify and Google+.

Most surprising of all perhaps is the award to Google+, which won the People’s Voice award for traditional social media. Considering it has been largely criticised in many aspects, it is surely a boost for all in the California HQ.

Recognition for the BBC also came via the People’s Voice award in the best news website category. However, this could largely be said to be expected, as globally it is always amongst the most hit sites in any given day.

The 2012 awards were the biggest there has yet been since being created in 1996, with almost 1.5 million people across 200 plus countries taking part in the People’s Voice categories.

There was also a People’s Special Achievement for Social Change. This was awarded to Facebook, in recognition of the very real impact the website has had, and continues to have, on changing political climates across the world.

Other notable awards were given to FactCheck.org, The Onion – which celebrated five awards, the singer Bjork and not for profit organisation TED (Technology, Entertainment and Design).

It is hoped that all the winners will be able to attend a special gala evening to be held in New York on 21st May, with acceptance speeches wittily being limited to just five words.
