Major new update of WordPress released

A new version of WordPress, the internationally popular worldwide blogging and content management tool, has been rolled out and made available for users.

For this latest in a regular series of WordPress updates, the changes are significant in that the new version – WordPress 3.4 – is the first major upgrading of the platform since version 3.3 was rolled out back in December 2011.

The developers of WordPress 3.4 have drawn particular attention to two key enhancements on the previous version.

The first major development is an increased capacity for user customisation, whereby a user template, or ‘theme’, can be incorporated into the WordPress website, enabling the user to easily adapt text, image and background colour accordingly.

The new ‘theme customiser’ also permits the user to create test different versions so that new ideas can be fully assessed before being live distribution takes place:

“The theme customiser…allows you to play around with various looks and settings…without publishing those changes to the whole world.”

explained Matt Mullenweg, one of the original founders of WordPress.

The second major development for the new WordPress version lies in its capacity to allow the user to apply HyperText Markup Language (HTML) code to captions which accompany images.

The advantages of being able to use HTML code for captions are greater control over their stylistic format, and the capacity to incorporate links into those captions.

The new version of WordPress also incorporates a feature which converts links to individual messages on social media site, Twitter, into transcripts of the messages themselves.
