Mobile payment facility introduced by Carphone Warehouse

Mobile phone store chain Carphone Warehouse (CPW) has launched a new scheme enabling mobile phone users to buy items at selected retail outlets simply by using their mobile device to carry out the transaction.

The scheme works using technology developed by Money Mobile Network (MMN) whereby mobile users install MMN’s ‘Simply Tap’ app to enable them to carry out transactions via a range of methods, including the scanning of QR codes. The technology also enables consumers to make selected on-line purchases.

Commenting on the new development, Andrew Harrison, chief executive officer of CPW, said:

“There is no doubt that mobile is changing the way that people search for and buy products. We know that customers and retailers alike want to take advantage of mobile payments.”

CPW is itself an equity holder in MMN, as is Charles Dunstone, CPW’s original founder. CPW outlets are expected henceforward to encourage smartphone purchasers to allow the Simply Tap app to be installed.

Commentators say that the technology developed by MMN is likely to be used much more widely in the sphere of mobile commerce (m-commerce) in the near future, given that Visa Europe has signaled that it wishes to invest in MMN, and has also announced its intention to enter into several joint UK mass market m-commerce initiatives with MMN.

These initiatives, outlined by Visa Europe at this year’s Mobile World Conference, have been announced at the same time as the organisation says it believes that, by 2020, over 50% of its transactions will take place via smartphone purchasing technology.
