Sainsbury’s introduces UK’s first supermarket shopping app

In what is understood to be the first of its kind in the UK, leading retail chain Sainsbury’s has released an app specifically designed to help shoppers at its many supermarkets across the country.

The new app has been produced in versions compatible with both iPhone and Android smartphones, enabling these devices to scan product barcodes via their built-in camera function. The app then keeps a running total of the cost of each item chosen.

One of the main advantages of the new facility – branded ‘Mobile Scan & Go’ – lies in the way it removes the need to empty the trolley at the check-out. Instead, the shopper simply scans their smartphone over a quick response (QR) code located at the till, which in turn advises the customer how much needs to be paid for the total shop.

Sainsbury’s has also ensured that the new app is fully compatible with the Nectar loyalty rewards programme – including enabling shoppers to take advantage of any Nectar discount vouchers they might have.

Moreover, it is understood that the app will eventually be used to help Sainsbury’s customise promotional opportunities for each customer during the course of their shop.

Commenting on the new launch, Group Development Director for Sainsbury’s, Luke Jensen, said:

“Our innovative Mobile Scan & Go technology is fantastic for those wanting to manage their budget or simply those who want a quicker in-store experience.”

The Mobile Scan & Go scheme is due to be introduced to all Sainsbury’s supermarkets once an initial trial in selected stores has concluded.
