WordPress introduces Bitcoin payment option

The popular open source blogging and content management platform, WordPress, has announced that it will now accept Bitcoins as a method of payment for its optional premium features.

Bitcoins – which make up an independent, but controlled, digital currency which operates on the international marketplace – have been accepted by WordPress owner, Automattic, in order, it says, to help facilitate transactions from those parts of the world where the standard WordPress payment terms of credit card or PayPal have not been made available to purchasers. A spokesperson from the company said.

“Whatever the reason, we don’t think an individual blogger from Haiti, Ethiopia, or Kenya should have diminished access to the blogosphere because of payment issues they can’t control. Our goal is to enable people, not block them. With Bitcoin we join a new digital economy that doesn’t leave anyone behind, essentially making financial transactions open source – something WordPress.com is behind 100 per cent.”

Bitcoins have been in circulation since 2009 but have thus far not achieved wide acceptance owing to software complications, exchange rate uncertainty, and question marks over how or whether the currency will eventually be subject to any governmental controls at a national level.

The payments system has however been recognised in many quarters as a reliable, convenient and relatively speedy means of conducting financial transactions.

Bitcoin payments to WordPress will be managed via a specialist Bitcoin intermediary organisation based in Florida – BitPay.com. BitPay.com ensures that any Bitcoin payments made for goods or services are converted into cash when they reach the vendor.
