Social media behemoth, Twitter, has launched a new web analytics function designed to help website owners track the direct impact Twitter has on the numbers visiting their particular site, and to assess the role Twitter users play in publicising their site.

The new web analytics tool is claimed by Twitter to be the first opportunity that website owners have thus far had available for monitoring the effectiveness of Twitter in any real depth.

According to Twitter, the new analytics tool with perform three functions.

Firstly, it will provide data on the extent to which a website’s content is being shared among Twitter users.

Secondly, it will monitor the number of visitors being directed to the website via Twitter.

Thirdly, the new analytics tool will examine how successful the website’s ‘Tweet Button’ is in encouraging visitors to pass on information about the site over the Twitter network.

Twitter says it has been able to develop the new tool as a result of its acquisition earlier this year of market analysis company, Black Type. In particular it has gained from being able to access the latter’s ‘BackTweets ‘, a service which can provide feedback to corporate Twitter users on the effectiveness of their messaging on the Twitter site; and has also benefited from being able to use Back Type’s real-time processing tool, known as ‘Storm’.

The new analytics tool is expected to be made available to all website owners within the space of a few weeks.

This week, comedian Jimmy Carr was taken to task by television personality Rav Wilding for tweeting a joke about airline disasters on the tenth anniversary of 9/11.

Carr tweeted: “Sept 11th Date of terrible air disaster. When Eastern Airlines Flt 212 crashed in 1974. Killing 69. No one will forget that in a hurry.”

The quip was cheap, offensive and crude, according to Crimewatch presenter Wilding, a regular on Big Brother’s Little Brother and former boyfriend of reality TV star Chantelle Houghton. He claimed Carr’s tweet was in “seriously bad taste”.

Jimmy Carr is a comic who is quite obviously prepared to push the boundaries of taste for the purposes of a joke. This information can be gleaned from a televisual omnipresence that makes even Adrian Chiles look picky. What’s more, it’s fair to assume that Carr’s 1.3 million Twitter followers choose to follow his account because they quite like what he does. Wilding, who regularly appears on The One Show to tell Middle England about the dangers of things like counterfeit ham, must have known what to expect from Carr when he clicked ‘Follow’.

So what exactly was Wilding mad about? That joke is a lot of things, but unexpected isn’t one of them. In fact, in 2009, Carr was involved in another joke spat, this time over a gag regarding British soldiers. Wilding, who served in the Army before appearing as a ‘dunk-tester’ on Get Your Own Back, did not publically speak out then. Although, in his defence, he may have been busy training for Strictly.

(Wilding no longer follows Carr. He does follow Piers Morgan; a man known for his sterling PR work for the British Army.)

Twitter has become one of the must have tools for internet marketers but which tools should we be using? There are numerous top 10 lists out there however many of them are out of date or simply don’t have the focus. So i have decided to compile a list with a little help from the guys in the office and some of my friends on the internet.

Tweet Deck – Twitter Client. In marketing we all understand the need to follow conversations and be able to engage in them quickly and easily. The standard Twitter interface makes this extremely difficult so making use of a comprehensive Twitter client such as Tweet Deck can make this much easier. The three panel layout means you can see track your direct messages, your standard responses and also the overall Twitter conversation of the people you follow.
http://www.tweetdeck.com/beta/

Tweet Scan – Brand Monitoring. This tool is excellent for finding out what is being said about you, a topic or a particular business. Tracking what people say about your business is extremely important. This tool is a great customer feedback tool as you can see what people are saying about your product or brand.
http://www.tweetscan.com/

Monitter – Real Time Keyword Monitoring. This tool allows you to type in multiple keywords and track the conversation around those in real time. This gives marketers the chance to see what people are talking about around particular topics and themes. This gives us the chance to release pages or news items around this coversation. This means that your site is keeping up to date with the latest trends and gives people a reason to come back.
http://monitter.com/

Twitter Tools Plugin – Keeping Your Readers Up To Date. Twitter Tools is a plugin for wordpress that allows you to post new post url’s to your Twitter feed automatically. This drives traffic to your blog or news section. If you post a lot of new blogs each day then this probably wont be the tool for you. Tweeting to much can annoy people.
http://alexking.org/projects/wordpress

Twitter Local – The Local Angle. This is something that i came across and have not had chance to fully research it however the concept behind it is interesting. A lot of SEO campaigns are going local these days so with this tool you can now track what people are saying in a particular geographical area.
http://www.twitterlocal.net/

This list could essentially be endless as the number of tools being released is rapidly growing. If you think we have missed an essential tool then why not drop us a line. It is also worth checking out Julia Roy’s blog. She does an excellent weekly round up of Twitter.
