There are currently several articles floating around the SEO community pointing out key trends to watch out for in 2019. Below, I’ve taken it a step further and outlined three core factors to make a priority as part of your ongoing SEO work.
From algorithm fluctuations and updates to recent buzz around the SEO community, these three factors are not going anywhere and should be integrated into your strategy as soon as possible:

1. UX & Usability

Even though mobile-first indexing is nothing new, the number of websites with poor responsiveness and user experience is staggering. With Search Console error notifications starting to be a common occurrence for Webmasters with poor UX, it’s never been more important to focus on how your users see your website, and the ease in which they can navigate and discover what they’re looking for. Points of consideration include:

  • Logical Use of Headings
    • Accessible Menu with a Clear Structure
    • Optimised Breadcrumbs (short and relevant)
    • Minimalistic Mobile Design (ditch unnecessary banners)

2. Page Speed

This is not page speed in the sense of ‘minify your scripts’, but rather a continuation on the first point about UX and usability. Simple considerations for the user and how you would expect a mobile website to be presented should inform your strategy in 2019. Your primary concerns should be to;

  • Compress images to an appropriate standard
    • Remove unnecessary AJAX code and opt for a plainer, simpler option
    • Consider hiding sliders within mobile and tablet views
    • Remove interstitials

3. Content Structure

With brand search and ‘authority’ optimisation highlighted as a trend to watch in 2019, the way in which content is structured on a page is arguably just as important. From targeting rich snippets and using lists for position zero results, page structure is everything at a time where all websites are scrambling to be an authority in their sector.
2019 will also see the rise in FAQ and voice query content targeting, namely due to the ease of achieving a position zero result with an effectively optimised page. For authority targeting, be sure to make the below points a priority:

  • Use an immediate <h2> to target a long-tail query related to your primary keyword
    • If targeting FAQ content, ensure all questions and answers are placed within some form of markup such as a bullet point or table.
    • If you’re creating content to answer a question, include the answer immediately below the <h2>. The rest of the article can then be used to explore related questions and content, and expand upon your initial answer.
    • Use logical internal linking when answering a question. This is particularly useful for mobile users who may be jumping around the site from one question to another.

A considered strategy is needed in 2019 to take your website one step further in the search results, and with a user-first approach, you’ll be making the job of search engines easier, for which you’ll be rewarded with a justified ranking boost.
