Adobe Commerce (Magento) Development Retainer

Refining and expanding your Adobe Commerce (Magento) business

PushON are Adobe Commerce (Magento) partners and have been since 2012. As an agency we pride ourselves not just on maintaining and support, but proactive development – contributing to the growth of our merchants’ businesses. Our development retainer service is designed precisely to cater for the proactive development of new features and functionalities.

Development Retainer

Our Adobe Commerce (Magento) Development Retainer is a ringfenced service enabling you to work through your development roadmap without diverting attention to minor support issues. Minor issues are handled through the Technical Support service. Typical development roadmap tasks might include introducing new functionality, implementing integrations, developing the front end, and performance enhancements.

The Development Retainer service is managed by a project manager, supported by both an account manager and business analyst. The project manager is the primary point of contact and will bring in the business analyst to provide consultancy as and when required to ensure the correct solution is put in place.

Adobe Commerce (Magento) Backlog Refinement

During the backlog refinement session, we will work with you to review, prioritise and edit the development retainer backlog. As a validation exercise for new items entering the backlog we will add them into the Single Page Plan (SPP) to ensure that they align with the business objectives. Regular backlog refinement sessions are usually held inline with our quarterly roadmap meetings (QRM) which are designed to bring together the wider team when multiple services are procured. As part of the QRM, contributions might also be made, which are then entered into the backlog.

Adobe Commerce (Magento) Development Retainer Workflow

The Development Retainer service is managed by a project manager and uses an agile project management methodology. This allows the order and priority of items to change as and when required. Sprints are scheduled before the start of each month. Each sprint comprises the following phases:

1. Planning

Each feature request is added to the backlog as a separate card and broken down during the planning phase, prior to implementation.

2. Design

A UX designer will be involved where a feature requires prototyping or a new user interface design.

3. Development

Where required, frontend and backend developers will implement the feature. Typically, developers work in pairs on features.

4. Review

Features are first peer reviewed, then passed to the Quality Assurance (QA) team prior to the client for User Acceptance Testing (UAT).

5. Release

Approved features are released during our pre-agreed release schedule.

5. Retrospective

At the end of each sprint a retrospective is held to ensure learnings are taken into future sprints.

Our Development Retainer Communication Rhythm

A Project Manager is the primary point of contact for the Development Retainer service, with support from Account Managers and Business Analysts where required. The Project Manager will deliver weekly updates, monthly reports and participate in the quarterly roadmap meeting.

The weekly update provides a brief overview of tasks progressed during the week prior, budget utilisation, tasks that will be released during the next release cycle and any tasks requiring input from the business or third parties. The monthly report offers an overview of how time has been utilised, which tasks have progressed, and several proactive reports for both performance and availability. Finally, the quarterly roadmap meeting (QRM) provides a mechanism for planning and strategic thinking across all service areas; technical support, development retainer, organic marketing and paid media when multiple services are procured.

Onboarding to our Development Retainer Service

For existing Adobe Commerce (Magento) businesses wishing to migrate to PushON for Development Retainer services onboarding typically entails; business immersion workshop, Adobe Commerce (Magento) audit and backlog refinement.

The business immersion workshop gives the broader team insights into various critical aspects of the business, including products, customers, and objectives. Conducting an Adobe Commerce (Magento) audit enables the Development Retainer team to gain a comprehensive understanding of the platform, including its infrastructure, integrations, and any third-party modules or customisations. Lastly, during the backlog refinement meeting, the Development Retainer team ensures that high-level requirements are captured in our project management system.
