A Magento 2 Commerce build for Medline Europe
A collaborative project working with Medlines’ own development team to build and deploy a Magento 2 build with 9 regional storefronts.
Medline
Medline are a healthcare company manufacturing & supplying medical and surgical supplies across the globe. Established in 1910 and growing to be the 27th largest private company in the USA according to Forbes, the largest privately held medical supplies company with a turnover exceeding $13.9 Billion in 2019.
The Challenge:
Medline had already invested in a Magento 2 website for the European market, unfortunately the website was unstable and unable to facilitate the growth and operational benefits that Medline strived for. Initially PushON were appointed to provide Magento consultancy to determine whether the eCommerce platform was fit-for-purpose and capable of delivering Medline’s ambitions.
The output of this was a functional specification which defined precisely how a new Magento 2 Commerce instance should be implemented. Importantly, Medline wanted to use Magento headless, with minimal usage of the Magento administration area. All product, category, customer, and pricing information would come from Microsoft Dynamics NAV, with orders going in the other direction. The Magento login system needed to be replaced with a Single Sign-on application, utilised within other Medline systems.
Importantly, Magento would need to be deployed utilising multiple storefronts to cater for different European countries, including; Germany, UK, Spain, France, Italy, Netherlands, Portugal and Slovakia. These storefronts would need to be managed by separate local content teams, with localised language and currency support.

“What we appreciate most about the UX is that they really apply best practice, know how to motivate/defend their decisions but are also willing to listen/incorporate the feedback we provide.”

The Solution:
Magento 2 Commerce was selected as the eCommerce platform for the new Medline European websites. Magento’s storefront capabilities provided a framework for deploying the nine regional websites, whilst facilitating local management and localisation of currencies & language.
PushON developed a bridge to pass data between Medline’s internal systems and Magento. Performing a layer of business logic in between to translate information as required.
Critically, Medline’s own IT team were embedded into the project, with a Magento developer and Project Manager being heavily involved in the project and working out of PushON’s office in the UK for a month.
